11.11.11 - Mike Rowle’s Equipment Tip of the Week -

A great thing about running is that it doesn’t require a lot of specialized equipment to do it.  A couple of invaluable pieces of equipment for beginners include a stop watch and a good pair of shoes.  What constitutes a good pair of shoes?  The answer to this question is a little controversial and the verdict is still out.  There are currently two trains of thought.  First, some people like high tech shoes with lots of cushion, shock absorbers, arch supports, etc.  On the other hand, there is a growing school of thought that swears less is better.  I agree with this group.  The United States has the most technologically advanced shoes in the world.  Yet we have the highest incidence of run related injuries.  Coincidence, I believe so.  Recent studies have shown that as the price of a shoe increases so does the rate of injury.  In other words, all that technology encourages us to run incorrectly and allows the foot to become weak.  Ultimately the decision is yours and you have to decide for yourself which shoe is best for you.
