“We are living in an unprecedented time in history, where our children may actually have a shorter life span than their parents.” -The New England Journal of Medicine

What are we talking about when we discuss “disease” and “chronic conditions”? Are we talking about internally or externally caused conditions that last forever without hope for improvement or elimination? Have you stopped to wonder what the value is to never finding a “cure” and why the doctors and the drug companies do not like it when you ask them questions or why they do not prescribe the basics of health such as prayer, nutrition, relaxation, sunlight, water and rest?

Chronic Health

Since I am asking you to be more involved in your healthcare and encouraging you to ask “why”, we should be asking ourselves why we have such chronic health problems in a country that consumes the majority of pharmaceuticals and why we are 37th in the world in health (The World Health Organization’s ranking of the world’s health systems was last produced in 2000). A 20 Year Analysis by America’s Health Rankings™ finds U.S. making successful strides in disease treatment, but not prevention.

“Unhealthy behaviors, such as smoking, poor eating habits and lack of exercise, are costing Americans billions on the treatment of preventable diseases” (November 2009).

“Over the past 20 years, our national health care system has helped extend the length of life, but not the quality of life,” said Reed Tuckson, M.D., United Health Foundation board member and UnitedHealth Group executive vice president and chief of medical affairs. “Unhealthy behaviors are costing the United States billions in the treatment of preventable, chronic diseases. Obesity alone is expected to cost the nation more than $344 billion in health care related expenditures by 2018.

“The art of medicine consists of amusing the patient while nature cures the disease.” - Voltaire

Complexities of Health & Wellness

As you have read the traditional medical model is based on one belief system stating that disease is external and that the treatment is primarily based on pharmaceutics and/or surgery with no appreciation for innate healing or cures.

It has been my experience that health and well-being is more complex and much like the human condition is fluid and dynamic. Therefore, the methods for which health care providers utilize to treat chronic conditions must also be fluid and dynamic.
