Common Injuries
Plantar fasciitis is a common injury to runners. Plantar fasciitis is characterized by heel pain or pain in the bottom of the foot. The pain is usually worse when bearing weight in the morning or after sitting for an extended period. You may be more susceptible to developing plantar fasciitis if you have an usually high or low arch and/or if you increase your activity level too fast. The best preventative measure is to follow a running program that starts out slow, especially if you are not accustomed to running, and progresses slowly. Self treatment for plantar fasciitis includes: Ice, rolling the arch of the foot on a golf ball, stretching the calf and plantar fascia, toe curls, and wearing a boot or night splint. More aggressive cases may need Astym, manual therapy, kinesio taping, iontophoresis, and ultrasound.
